Hayek argued that socialism was the road to serfdom. The intellectual foundations on which this movement has been built stretch back to antiquity, were further developed during the Middle Ages and in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century England, and were ultimately formulated into a coherent political philosophy at the time of the founding of the United States.
Consider how these two founding documents of the United States reflect the four pillars of conservative thought: The most dramatic realignment was the white South, which moved from Democratic to Republican between and He declined to position himself as a champion of working-class Americans struggling to make ends meet.
They vary considerably in the importance they give to individual liberties versus a well-ordered society. It becomes a favorite target of attack from the left and is disowned by many of the prominent conservatives of the day.
And finally, belief in God. Adherence to virtue is also a necessary condition of the pursuit of freedom.
Inthe Fox News audience mirrored the public in terms of both partisanship and ideology. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Bush, whose presidency transformed the nation, the Republican Party, and conservatism. They lamented what had happened to the United States, and indeed to the rest of the world, during the first half of the twentieth century.
